Have an argument to make? We want to hear it — if you can make your case in 600 words or less.

Before You Submit
535.news Editorial Guidelines

If you would like to submit an editorial for consideration for publication, please adhere to the below 535.news guidelines. Editorials exclusive to 535 can be sent through this form and we aim to give you a response within 3 business days.

If you have not received a response within three days, feel free to submit it to other publications for consideration.

  • Embrace the concept of “If I had more time I would have written a shorter letter.” Editorials that are 600 words or less are more likely to actually be read. Everyone is busy, don’t waste time on adjectives.
  • It needs to have an actual opinion in it. Make a strong case for your argument and what your credentials are to make it.
  • It needs to be relevant to Capitol Hill. Even better if it’s directly related to an issue currently moving through committee or on the floor.
  • Provocative language is OK, ad hominem attacks are not. We will not publish any submissions that contain personal attacks or anonymous quotes.
  • Disclose any conflicts of interest. It’s not disqualifying but we need to know. For instance, if you’re a member of Congress submitting an editorial about regulating an industry that your spouse works in — tell us that up front.
  • Keep it human. Any submissions that appear to be written by AI will not be considered.

535.news reserves the right to edit any editorial for length or grammar and style reasons.
